This was our 13th year with the Appalachia Service Project!

Each summer we send youth and adult volunteers to Central Appalachia for a week-long home-repair ministry with the Appalachia Service Project, Inc., a Tennessee-based non-profit organization. In July we spent a week repairing and rebuilding five homes in Jonesville, Virginia as volunteers for ASP, Inc.

The Presbyterian Church oversees and organizes the Pleasantville ASP mission and welcomes volunteers from across the community. Most of our volunteers are high-school aged. Youth volunteers must be at least 15 years old and must have finished ninth grade to be eligible to participate.

The ASP mission is much more than just a "trip." We do local community service, skill-building, team-building, sensitivity training and fundraising during the school year. The summer mission trip and the activities leading up to it are opportunities for personal growth as well as spiritual growth.

This past spring, our thirty-six volunteers prepared for the mission trip as follows:

  • By developing home-repair construction skills and doing local community service with A-Home, a local non-profit organization that rehabilitates and provides affordable housing for people with low incomes.  In June our volunteers spent two Saturdays painting two A-Home houses in Mt. Kisco, NY;
  • By running the Pleasantville Day Community Pancake Breakfast fundraiser on May 15th; and
  • By raising additional funds to finance the mission trip.

It costs about $700 to send each volunteer to Appalachia. A big part of that cost goes to ASP, Inc., which purchases the building materials we use to repair people's homes.  We’re grateful to our supporters and “shareholders” who make this mission possible!
