Minute for Stewardship

Minute for Stewardship - Ruth Fischer

My journey with Pleasantville Presbyterian Church began 50 years ago.

I still remember Pastor John Whallon showing up at my door the day after I first came to worship. That small gesture made me feel so seen and welcomed — and it set the tone for everything that followed.

Over the years, my faith has grown under the guidance of Pastors John Sheppard, Susan Philes, Debra Bronkema, and Ray. Each of them has had a special place in my journey. They listened when I needed to talk, encouraged me when I stumbled, and helped me keep my eyes on the path of faith — always with patience and without judgment.

But as wonderful as our pastors have been, I’ve learned that a church is so much more than its leaders. You probably remember that little finger play: “Here is the church, here is the steeple, open the doors, and see all the people.” It’s the people — you — who have made Pleasantville Presbyterian truly home for me.

You’ve taught and nurtured my children, who still think of this as their church. You’ve inspired me through the ways you serve — through coat and food drives, ASP trips, and Midnight Run. You’ve made it easy for me to find real, hands-on ways to care for others.

I’ll never forget when Superstorm Sandy hit. With just 24 hours’ notice, I somehow found myself organizing a hot meal for families without heat or light. (And as many of you know, I’m not exactly known for my cooking!) But you all showed up — ready, willing, and joyful — and together we made it happen. That’s who this church is.

You’ve shared in my joys and been there for me in the hard times. And through it all, you’ve reminded me that our church isn’t just a charity or a social club. Everything we do flows from the teachings of Jesus and from the faith we share.

As we move into this season of thankfulness, I find myself reflecting on what this community truly means to me — and how grateful I am to be part of it. It’s also a time for us to think about how we can each give back, so that Pleasantville Presbyterian can continue to share the good news of salvation for generations to come.

As we enter our church’s Stewardship season take time to consider what our church means to you and how you can respond in kind.
